The SAGE Encyclopedia of Music and Culture presents key concepts in the study of music in its cultural context and provides an introduction to the discipline of ethnomusicology, its methods, concerns, and its contributions to knowledge and understanding of the world's musical cultures, styles, and practices. The diverse voices of contributors to this encyclopedia confirm ethnomusicology's fundamental ethos of inclusion and respect for diversity. Combined, the multiplicity of topics and approaches are presented in an easy-to-search A-Z format and offer a fresh perspective on the field and the subject of music in culture. By far, one of the worst unscholarly books I have ever had the displeasure of reading. The scholarship is so poor it beggars belief. The lazy scholarship displayed here, especially in correctly identifying Senegambian artists' true ethnic origins - I find absolutely shocking. If appears that if you don't know what ethnic group the artist comes from, you might as well just call them Wolof rather than finding out for sure before putting this on the market for the world to see. I find it absolutely disturbing that Western writers when writing about Senegambian or African people, they tend to use the short cut by lumping people into the predominant culture they've heard of rather than finding out for sure. Take a look at their entry on the late Senegambian musician Musa Ngum where they wrongly identified him as Wolof. His father Antuman Ngum belongs to the Ngum family whch is a classic Serer surname that even a grade one student could have told you.
